Civil Protection activates the Special Emergency Flood Plan of Catalonia due to heavy rainfall. The 112 emergency number has received 1,768 calls and El Prat airport has seen over 120 flights cancelled.
The Government of Catalonia has activated the Special Emergency Flood Plan of Catalonia (Inuncat) in response to the accumulated rainfall and the expected precipitation early Wednesday morning. The alert is expected to be lifted throughout Wednesday morning, as reported by the Salvador Illa administration.
Tuesday saw rainfall across Catalonia, particularly affecting the coastal and central pre-coastal areas. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) recorded the heaviest accumulations in the northeast, especially in the Baix Empordà region, where over 90 litres per square metre in three hours were reported, according to eldebate.com.
In light of this situation, Civil Protection sent an Es-Alert message to the mobile phones of residents in the area. The alert advised against unnecessary travel and approaching rivers or ravines.
The emergency phone number 112 has handled 1,768 calls related to the weather conditions by 9:00 PM. By area, 34.2% of the calls came from the metropolitan area of Barcelona and 27.63% from Vallès Occidental.
The municipalities generating the most alerts are Barcelona, with 345 calls, and San Cugat del Vallès, with 275. The Catalonia Medical Emergency System has received 67 alerts affecting 63 people.
The storm has also significantly impacted air transport. El Prat airport has cancelled over 120 flights and has recorded more than 700 delays, according to data from Flight Radar. Nearby weather stations recorded an accumulated precipitation of 48.5 litres per square metre on Tuesday.
The flood alert will remain active until the heavy rainfall subsides. Citizens are advised to follow the instructions of Civil Protection, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay away from watercourses until the situation normalises.
