The unions UGT and CCOO of Catalonia have started in Tarragona the five joint informational assemblies aimed at promoting the general strike on November 11.
The first of the five assemblies took place in Tarragona, as reported by diarimes.com, and with it UGT of Catalonia and CCOO of Catalonia aim to show that they share the same strategy for the November 11 event. The two unions describe it as a decisive meeting and convey a message of unity in action.
The plan is for most workplaces to halt their activities in the morning and for the streets to fill up at noon and in the afternoon. Camil Ros, general secretary of UGT of Catalonia, links the mobilization to the housing crisis, although he calls for a broader scope.
“We believe this is the moment. The housing crisis has generated an explosion of mobilization. But we demand much more.”
According to the data held by the organizations, between 2015 and 2024, wages have increased by around 28%, rent by 59%, and home purchases by 96%. Belén López Sánchez, general secretary of CCOO of Catalonia, argues that the positive economic indicators are not reaching the majority.
“The macroeconomic data is very good in the country, but that is only being seen in the pockets of a few.”
Among their demands is a 7% increase in the minimum interprofessional wage. The unions also hope that the governments emerging from the upcoming elections will address housing, wages, and purchasing power.
López describes the strike as a general halt of the country, with only minimum services operating, and adds that the productive system depends on the workers. Rubio speaks of a “strike atmosphere” and a “readiness for mobilization.”
The territorial representatives lament that the other unions have not accepted a joint mobilization for November 11. They still need to specify where and how the demonstrations will take place, a detail that the residents of Catalan cities will learn in the coming days.
