Catalunya achieved a historic milestone in May, welcoming 2.4 million hotel guests, marking the highest number ever recorded for this month. Barcelona led the way with nearly two million overnight stays.

Catalunya has set a new benchmark for tourism in May 2026, attracting an impressive 2.4 million hotel guests, according to provisional data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This figure represents a significant increase of 4.4% compared to May 2025, solidifying Catalunya’s position as Spain’s most visited autonomous community. Notably, Barcelona emerged as the top city for overnight stays nationwide, recording 1,995,339 nights, surpassing Madrid and Calvià.

The surge in visitors reflects both international and domestic tourism growth. Of the total travelers, approximately 1.6 million were from abroad, while around 773,000 were Spanish residents. This influx has positioned Catalunya as the third most popular destination among national travelers and international visitors alike.

In terms of regional performance, Barcelona attracted 1.4 million travelers, marking a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. Girona experienced the most substantial relative growth at 8%, bringing in over half a million visitors. Conversely, Lleida faced challenges with a decline of 5.8%, totaling just over 62,000 travelers.

The overall trend indicates that while more tourists are flocking to Catalunya than ever before, their average length of stay is decreasing. In May, the average duration was recorded at just 2.61 nights per visitor, which is notably lower than pre-pandemic levels but aligns with recent trends across Europe where shorter trips have become common.

This uptick in tourism has also driven up accommodation prices across Spain by an average of 5%. The average daily rate (ADR) for hotel rooms reached €123.7—an increase of 4.2% compared to last year. Meanwhile, revenue per available room (RevPAR) climbed to €88—a rise of 5.8%. Notably, Illes Balears reported the highest price increases among regions at nearly 9%, while Catalunya saw a respectable rise of about 4.7%. Marbella continues to lead nationally with the highest ADR and RevPAR figures.

The first five months of 2026 have also shown promising results for Catalunya’s hospitality sector; hotels welcomed over 8 million guests, marking a 6% increase from last year during this period—the first time this milestone has been achieved so early in the year since records began.

This robust growth trajectory is reminiscent of pre-pandemic tourism levels when cities like Barcelona regularly topped national charts for visitor numbers and overnight stays.

The future looks bright for Catalunya’s tourism industry as it gears up for summer travel season peaks ahead; however, stakeholders must address declining stay durations to maximize economic benefits from increased visitor numbers.
