The Plaza Rovira i Trias has been awarded the top prize for its stunning marine-themed decorations during this year's Gràcia festivities, marking two decades of participation. The vibrant display features jellyfish and silver fish, captivating both locals and visitors alike.
The vibrant atmosphere of the Gràcia neighborhood was electrified as the Plaza Rovira i Trias clinched the award for best decoration in this year’s Fiestas de Gràcia. With a remarkable score of 435 points, the plaza’s enchanting marine-themed adornments, including jellyfish and shimmering silver fish, captivated judges and festival-goers alike.
This year marks a significant milestone as it celebrates 20 consecutive years of participation in one of Barcelona’s most cherished cultural events. The decorations not only highlight the plaza’s commitment to community spirit but also pay homage to local culture by referencing the Mallorcan band Antònia Font’s album Batiscafo Katiuscas. The title of this year’s theme, Basticaforoviruskas, cleverly intertwines these two celebratory aspects.
The competition was fierce, with other notable entries vying for recognition. The second-place winner was El Invernadero Encantado on Calle Mozart, which drew inspiration from the Ciutadella greenhouse. This whimsical installation featured bright yellow and pink flowers adorning the ceiling alongside colorful birds and other delightful creatures.
In third place was Calle Llibertat, which embraced a The Lord of the Rings theme in collaboration with four neighboring streets: Progrés, Tordera, Fraternitat de Dalt, and Fraternitat de Baix. Llibertat stood out with its impressive entrance featuring giant soldiers and an interior lake that added to its fantastical allure.
The excitement surrounding the awards ceremony was palpable as crowds gathered from 6 PM, primarily consisting of members from the 23 participating commissions. Anticipation ran high as attendees eagerly awaited results while expressing their enthusiasm through playful shouts of “tongo,” questioning potential biases in judging.
The jury’s decision took time as they first awarded prizes for ‘sweet festivity’ categories before recognizing balconies, storefronts, and other voluntary decorations outside the main competition circuit. Their choice aligned with representatives from Casa Vincens who also praised Plaza Rovira’s creative marine display by offering a visit to Gaudí’s architectural masterpiece in honor of its centenary.
While Calle Llibertat celebrated its achievement among fellow themed streets with a special mention for coordination and creativity, some participants faced disappointment. For instance, Calle Providència received recognition but landed in 22nd place despite its floral motifs being well-received by locals.
This year’s festivities not only showcased artistic talent but also fostered community engagement through shared experiences among residents and visitors alike. As celebrations continue throughout August, those wishing to explore these vibrant displays can do so until late evening hours across various streets in Gràcia.
