A City Under the Spell of Lara Croft
Girona, known for its rich history and medieval architecture, is temporarily transforming into a film set for the new series Tomb Raider, produced by Amazon Prime Video. Actress Sophie Turner, famous for her role in Game of Thrones, takes on the iconic role of Lara Croft, the intrepid archaeologist and explorer. From June 5 to June 8, the streets of Barri Vell are witnessing thrilling scenes that promise to take viewers on an adrenaline-filled journey.
The filming has brought a series of restrictions that have affected both residents and tourists. During the daytime, especially between seven in the morning and eleven at night, traffic cuts and limitations on access to certain key points, such as the iconic Cathedral, have been implemented. Tourists hoping to admire this historic monument found signs indicating “restricted access due to filming,” which caused some frustration among those wishing to explore its beauty.
One of the highlights of the filming includes an intense chase filmed in front of the Cathedral, where viewers are expected to be captivated by the combination of cultural heritage and thrilling action. Additionally, other spaces like the Plaça del Vi have been transformed with special decorations to bring to life the adventurous world that characterises Tomb Raider. The technical team has worked hard to create an authentic atmosphere, using cranes to place artificial plants and colourful banners.
Despite the commotion generated by the filming, the Girona City Council has assured that all measures are designed to minimise inconveniences. However, it is undeniable that this blockbuster is putting Girona on the international map as an attractive destination not only for tourists but also for future film productions.
As the filming progresses, an air of mystery persists regarding whether Sophie Turner will be present for all the shoots or if some scenes will be filmed with doubles due to her recent back injury. This secrecy has further fueled curiosity among both locals and visitors.
