Ponent on alert: early harvesting increases the risk of agricultural fires

A challenging summer for farmers in Ponent

The high temperatures that have hit the Ponent region in recent weeks have led to a significant advance in the cereal harvesting and collection campaign. This situation has raised alarms among the Agents Rurals, who warn that if it does not rain soon, the agricultural fire season could be "very complicated." Llorenç Ricou, head of the body in Lleida, has pointed out that while the early harvest may be beneficial in allowing work to finish sooner, it also complicates fire control and prevention due to extended agricultural activity.

In light of this situation, Ricou has urged farmers to prioritise harvesting in fields close to populated areas. The recommendation is to establish ploughed and clean strips free of stubble around farms and estates, with a minimum of 100 to 200 meters. "Citizens must self-protect," emphasised Ricou, suggesting that one should not wait for external help if adequate preventive measures are not taken.

The data is alarming: from January to May, 42 wildfires have been recorded in Ponent, a considerable increase compared to just nine incidents during the same period last year. This increase is mainly attributed to adverse weather conditions and inadequate agricultural practices. According to Ricou, this year is atypical due to the simultaneous start of the cereal campaign across Ponent.

To address the growing risk, the Agents Rurals are already activated and plan to reinforce their surveillance and control devices during the most critical days. This includes increased aerial monitoring using helicopters and collaboration with Special Forest Fire Prevention Groups (GEPIF). In this regard, Ricou highlighted that compliance with regulations by farmers has improved significantly; only 10% fail to comply with the established regulations.

In a related note, this meeting also marked the end of Llorenç Ricou's term as regional head. From August 10, Joan Baraut, who has four years of experience in the area, will take over. This change represents a new phase for the body responsible for ensuring environmental and agricultural safety in Lleida.
