The Gothic Quarter tops the INE ranking with 69% foreign residents, and eleven of the fifteen neighbourhoods with the highest foreign population in the country are in Catalonia.
According to eldebate.com, the Gothic neighbourhood of Barcelona has the highest proportion of foreign population in Spain, at 69%. The data comes from the latest edition of urban indicators from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
In the Ciutat Vella district, Raval Norte and Raval Sur also exceed the number of Spanish-born residents, with 52% foreigners. Following them are Santa Caterina, with 47%, and Barceloneta, with 42.8%.
The top ten also includes Besós and El Maresme, on the border with San Adrián de Besós, where 41.4% of the residents are foreigners. In L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, La Torrasa ranks tenth with 38.6%, and La Florida is eleventh with 38.5%.
Among the fifteen top neighbourhoods in the country, eleven are in Catalonia: eight in Barcelona and three in L'Hospitalet. The other four are Padrolongo, San Cristóbal, and San Diego in Madrid, and district 8 of Murcia.
The crime data from the same study places Catalonia in a less favourable position than the rest of Spain.
In the section on crime by municipality, El Prat de Llobregat tops the list with 126 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants. Salou, in third place, records 100 crimes per thousand people.
On the opposite end, Olesa de Montserrat has the lowest rate in Spain, with 17.6 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants. It is followed by Castellar del Vallès, with 18.8, and Manlleu, fifth from the bottom of the ranking, with 20.2.
Among the fifteen cities with the highest crime rates in Spain, seven are Catalan: Sitges, San Adrián de Besós, Roses, El Vendrell, and Figueres, in addition to the already mentioned El Prat de Llobregat and Salou. No municipality from Lérida appears among the highest crime rates in the country.
The figures can be consulted in the latest edition of urban indicators published by the INE, which breaks down the data by neighbourhood and municipality.
