A radical change in Badalona's cleaning
The City Council of Badalona has made a groundbreaking decision for the future of the city by approving, this Friday, the largest cleaning and waste collection contract in its history. With an investment exceeding €500 million over a period of twelve years, this initiative aims to completely transform the service that had become obsolete.
The new model will be implemented from the second half of May and promises notable changes. The workforce will increase from 416 to 565 workers, allowing for more efficient and quicker attention to the municipality's needs. Additionally, the fleet will be completely renewed, increasing the number of vehicles dedicated to cleaning from 110 to 146 units.
A highlighted innovation will be the incorporation of containers equipped with sensors that will optimise collection based on their fill level. This will prevent overflow and ensure more effective management of urban space. Furthermore, the frequency of cleaning on all streets will be increased by 30%, ensuring that every corner is washed at least once a month, compared to the four months that could pass previously.
It is not only about improving infrastructure; significant enhancements in citizen attention have also been planned. An exclusive office will be opened to resolve questions and incidents related to the service, along with a free phone line and a mobile application to facilitate communication between residents and the City Council.
Among the most notable initiatives is the new service aimed at collecting furniture directly from the homes of elderly individuals. This service can be easily requested by phone or through the mobile application, ensuring that all citizens have access to these resources without complications.
Xavier Garcia Albiol, the mayor of Badalona, has described this contract as “a revolution” for the city. During an event where he officially presented this initiative alongside the second deputy mayor Daniel Gràcia and councillor David Mejía, he emphasised that its approval was made possible thanks to the absolute majority obtained in the municipal elections of last year 2023. This allowed for the completion of all necessary administrative phases in record time.
