A weekend full of surprises at Barcelona Port
This weekend, Barcelona Port has surprised citizens with an innovative celebration that combines tradition and modernity. In its third edition of open days, the port infrastructure presented a dancing boats show, where various vessels performed choreographies on the water, delighting attendees with their synchronized movements.
Inspired by the famous maritime festival Schlepperballett from Hamburg, this event allowed Barcelonians to learn more about the ships that operate daily in their waters. From tugboats to pilots, each vessel showcased its skill as they spun and shot water salutes in front of the iconic World Trade Center.
The relationship between the port and the city has evolved significantly in recent years. José Alberto Carbonell, president of the port, emphasized that this connection is vital for both parties. “We cannot turn our backs,” he stated during the event. The opening of the dock to the public is an important step towards a more accessible and friendly infrastructure.
Despite the success of the nautical dance, there is still work to be done to improve connectivity between urban areas and the port. An ambitious project aims to allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel from Drassanes to the Marina del Prat Vermell without having to detour through Montjuïc or Gran Via.
In addition to the water show, this year an exclusive visit to the Llobregat lighthouse was offered, a historic site built in 1852 that is normally not open to the public. This lighthouse was crucial in guiding vessels to a safe port and represents an important part of Barcelona's maritime heritage.
Attendees also enjoyed rides on the traditional Golondrinas, iconic boats that have sailed the waters of Barcelona for generations. Such activities strengthen the bond between citizens and their port environment.
As future editions of the event are planned, more attractions are expected to be included, such as the Portal de la Pau, where a center dedicated to maritime dissemination known as Port Center is anticipated to be built. Although it will not be ready until 2028, it promises to be an additional attraction for those wishing to learn about the history and functioning of the port.
