The iDEM project, aimed at improving inclusivity in democratic processes, wrapped up with a presentation led by Marta Villanueva. Key recommendations for enhancing citizen participation were unveiled.
In a significant step towards fostering inclusive democratic practices, the city of Barcelona has concluded its European iDEM project. On June 23, at the City Hall’s Saló de Cròniques, Marta Villanueva, the city’s councilor for Health and Disability, presided over the closing ceremony alongside David Bondia, the Síndic de Greuges. This initiative sought to develop innovative tools that enhance deliberation and participation among citizens.
Innovative tools for citizen engagement
The iDEM project focused on creating spaces that promote democratic deliberation while ensuring accessibility for all participants. During the event, attendees learned about the project’s outcomes specific to Barcelona’s context. The initiative was designed not only to gather insights but also to implement practical solutions that address barriers faced by marginalized groups in civic engagement.
Key figures contribute insights
Alongside Villanueva and Bondia, notable contributors included Maria Buhigas, chief architect of Barcelona, and Horacio Saggion, a professor of computer science specializing in artificial intelligence from UPF. Saggion coordinated the iDEM project and emphasized the importance of integrating technology with civic processes:
“Our goal was to create an inclusive framework that allows every voice to be heard in decision-making.”
Recommendations for future initiatives
The closing session featured a comprehensive presentation of recommendations aimed at improving accessibility within civic spaces. These suggestions are expected to guide future projects across Europe as cities strive for greater inclusivity in governance. Historical precedents show that cities like Amsterdam have successfully implemented similar frameworks, resulting in increased public trust and participation.
A vision for inclusive democracy
The culmination of this project reflects Barcelona’s commitment to fostering an environment where every citizen can engage meaningfully in democracy. As Villanueva stated during her address:
“We must ensure our democratic processes reflect our diverse society.”
The insights gained from this initiative will serve as a foundation for ongoing efforts toward inclusivity.
