A new chapter for Magòria
The emblematic reform project for Magòria, located in the Sants-Montjuïc district, has come back to life after several postponements. This Thursday, the Barcelona City Council announced the awarding of the ideas competition to the Landskrona team, marking the formal start of a plan that promises to transform this long-forgotten area.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2028, and it is expected to include a series of sports facilities, a new garden, and an underground centre for the management and maintenance of public space. This development aims not only to revitalise the area but also to provide new recreational opportunities for local residents.
Magòria has a rich history dating back to its function as a railway station from 1912 to 1974. Since then, the area has remained unused, becoming a wasteland that longs for new life. Between 1984 and 2009, it housed a football field that the Unió Esportiva Sants wishes to reclaim as an integral part of the new complex.
The project includes the construction of an 11-a-side football pitch with stands, as well as a smaller pitch for 7-a-side football, which will serve as the basis for a sports hall with four courts. This infrastructure will not only benefit local athletes but also promote community use of the space.
Despite the enthusiasm for this renewed approach to Magòria, the project faces significant challenges. The estimated cost of the works is approximately 36 million euros, although issues related to another part of the land belonging to the regional government are still pending resolution. This section could include social health facilities and affordable housing, adding an additional layer of complexity to the overall development.
Despite the previous bureaucratic difficulties that have delayed the project's progress — initially scheduled for completion in 2022 — the current municipal government under Jaume Collboni has decided to move forward with necessary modifications. The new design includes a central passage that will connect Gran Via with Corral alley, aiming to better integrate the surrounding neighbourhoods affected by this transformation.
As the anticipated start date for construction in 2028 approaches, residents are eagerly awaiting to see how this former enclave will become a revitalised hub within the urban fabric of Barcelona. However, many wonder if this time the deadlines will finally be met or if new obstacles will arise on the path to a renewed Magòria.
