The old Villa Denise, from where Lluís Companys planned a plot against the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera in 1926, reopens as Casa Macià after nearly six years of restoration.

According to Heraldo de Aragón, the old Villa Denise opened its doors this Sunday as Casa Macià, after almost six years of restoration work carried out by a hundred volunteers. It was in this house that the former president of the Generalitat Lluís Companys plotted in 1926 to overthrow the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and proclaim the Catalan Republic.

According to the organisers, around 500 people attended the event. Among them were three former presidents of the Generalitat, Jordi Pujol, Carles Puigdemont and Pere Aragonès, along with the former president of the Parliament Carme Forcadell and the current president of the chamber, Josep Rull.

Rull defended that Catalonia will never renounce its identity and collective aspirations. He proposed Casa Macià as a space to build bridges between different stages of history and called for connecting Northern Catalonia with Southern Catalonia.

“Northern Catalonia is the Principality of Catalonia”

In his speech, Rull recalled that the defence of freedoms and collective rights has often come at a very high personal cost. He quoted the popular saying “Without the Rosselló there is no nation, without the Vallespir there is no destiny” and invoked Francesc Macià to not give up on the “blue triangle” of the estelada and to continue fighting for independence.

The programme included the presentation of the graphic novel The Plot, with texts by Jordi Rodó, and the book Fets i gent, published by Estat Català and consisting of more than 116 biographies. There was also a tribute to the families of those who accompanied Macià during the events of Prats de Molló.
