The PP candidate for the mayoralty of Barcelona is asking the city council to halt the bidding for the tram connection along the Diagonal until after the municipal elections. The works would not begin until the summer of 2027.

The candidate of the PP for mayor, Dani Sirera, has demanded that Jaume Collboni suspend the bidding for the tram connection along Diagonal avenue until after the elections. This request comes amid the pre-campaign for the general elections on 29 November and with the municipal elections on the horizon for next May.

The schedule set by the city council establishes the start of the works for the summer of 2027, after the municipal elections have taken place and a new council has been formed. According to the city council, the connection would be completed by 2031 if deadlines are met, and trams would run uninterrupted from Besòs to Baix Llobregat.

Collboni cannot mortgage the mobility of Barcelona with six months left until the elections.

In a statement, Sirera argues that the future of the project should be decided by the new municipal government that emerges from the polls. The PP believes that the connection is "neither a priority nor a necessity" for the city and reminds that the party has always opposed these works.

For the residents and drivers in the area, Sirera warns that works on a major artery could worsen the congestion already suffered by thousands of drivers every day. The first step of the project will be the bidding for the remaining section, between Verdaguer and Francesc Macià.

The popular leader proposes that priorities should shift to other infrastructures, such as metro line 9, which was recently affected by a sinkhole during construction. Additionally, he advocates strengthening the X1 bus line as an alternative to connect the two ends of the tram, which currently terminate at the square of Francesc Macià and the square of Jacint Verdaguer.
