Barcelona has emerged as a leading city in Europe for fitness engagement, with an impressive 42.3% of its population now holding memberships at sports and fitness centers. This statistic not only highlights the city’s commitment to healthy living but also positions it significantly above the European average, reflecting a robust culture of physical activity among its residents.

Growth and Economic Impact of Fitness Centers

The findings were unveiled during a presentation by the Barcelona Sports Institute (IBE) and ADECAFF at the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. The report indicates that there are currently 949 sports centers in Barcelona, with 929 operational and 20 under development. This growth underscores the maturity and resilience of Barcelona’s sports ecosystem, which has evolved steadily over recent years.

The fitness market in the city boasts approximately 733,061 members, generating an annual revenue of €476.3 million. These figures illustrate a diverse sector capable of adapting to changing public demands for health and wellness services.

The councilor for Sports, David Escudé, emphasized that “the excellent data presented in this first report on the health of the fitness sector in Barcelona not only highlights the strength of our municipal centers but also reinforces their role as providers of sports services for all ages across the city.”

ADECAFF President August Tarragó expressed satisfaction with these findings, stating that they provide reliable data about the market’s dynamics: “We are very pleased because we are starting to have credible methodology-based data that allows us to understand who we are, how many we are, and what we look like.” This marks a significant step forward for industry stakeholders seeking insights into their operations.

The study particularly praises Municipal Sports Centers (CEM), which despite comprising only 4.4% of total facilities, account for an impressive 27.5% share of memberships—over 201,000 users. They generate around €121.8 million annually, representing about 25.5% of total sector revenue.

This success illustrates CEMs’ strategic importance as essential public services that ensure equitable access to sports activities throughout various neighborhoods in Barcelona. Their widespread distribution helps counterbalance private offerings concentrated in specific districts.

Tarragó noted that “this first report begins to put data into our sector,” highlighting its significance for understanding market trends.

The private sector dominates with approximately 95.6%, consisting of 908 centers serving around 531,725 members, generating €354.4 million annually. The diversity within this segment is notable; boutique gyms make up about 75.5%, followed by middle-market facilities at 16%, and low-cost options at just over 4%.

The past five years have seen significant expansion within this market segment; between 2020 and 2025 alone, there were 81 new openings driven by post-pandemic recovery and increasing health consciousness among residents.

This comprehensive study concludes that Barcelona possesses a well-established, resilient sporting market capable of attracting investment while adapting to evolving consumer habits regarding physical activity. The synergy between dynamic private offerings and a strong public network is one key asset underpinning Barcelona’s reputation as a European leader in sport and quality living standards.

The growing number of operational fitness centers alongside rising membership numbers indicates that Barcelona is experiencing a flourishing phase in sports participation—a trend likely to continue shaping both community health outcomes and economic vitality moving forward.
