The Catalan government plans to introduce a decree this autumn to assist farmers in the Conca de Tremp region. This initiative aims to modernize irrigation systems and promote agricultural growth.
The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, revealed plans on Friday for a significant governmental initiative aimed at supporting farmers in the Conca de Tremp area of Lleida. This autumn, a new decree will be introduced that promises financial assistance for local irrigators, with the government covering 70% of the costs while landowners will contribute 30%.
Illa made these announcements during his visit to ongoing modernization projects in Talarn and Tremp. He emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating that they are designed not only to provide immediate relief but also to encourage farmers to take advantage of improved irrigation systems.
The modernization project includes critical infrastructure improvements, specifically focusing on the main irrigation channel. Currently, work is underway on a primary section that originates from the Sant Antoni reservoir—a project that had been stalled since 2017. Illa confirmed that this first phase is expected to be completed by year-end with an investment exceeding 9 million euros, involving collaboration between two construction companies.
This undertaking is complex due to its technical challenges; it involves installing two large pipes—each with a diameter of two meters—across the Noguera Pallaresa river. Illa noted that despite favorable water levels this year, executing such infrastructure requires careful planning and execution.
In addition to immediate financial aid, Illa mentioned that plans are already being drafted for a comprehensive distribution network. Once fully operational, this system will serve approximately 4,600 hectares, benefiting over 1,000 landowners across several municipalities including Tremp, Talarn, Castell de Mur, Gavet de la Conca, Llimiana, Isona, and Conca Dellà.
The president highlighted that these irrigation improvements represent a transformative opportunity for local agriculture. Farmers can expect enhanced conditions for cultivating new crops—potentially including fruit trees—which could significantly boost local agricultural productivity.
This initiative reflects broader trends in agricultural policy where governments increasingly recognize the need for sustainable practices and technological advancements in farming.
