The city of Girona is taking decisive steps to address overflowing trash bins in its central areas. New larger bins will be installed, and local businesses will be engaged to promote better waste disposal practices.
In a bid to enhance the cleanliness of its streets, Girona has announced a comprehensive plan aimed at tackling the persistent issue of overflowing trash bins in the city center. Mayor Lluc Salellas revealed that the municipality will not only increase the frequency of emptying existing bins but also introduce larger containers in high-traffic areas such as La Rambla and Santa Clara Street.
The decision comes after numerous complaints from residents and visitors about unsightly waste accumulation around public trash receptacles. Salellas emphasized that this initiative is crucial for improving the city’s image, stating, “The sight of overflowing bins is unacceptable for anyone who cares about our community.” The mayor’s office has already begun implementing these changes in response to growing concerns.
Part of this strategy involves collaboration with local restaurants and shops that sell takeout food and beverages. The city aims to encourage these establishments to allow customers to return their packaging after consumption rather than discarding it in public bins. Salellas noted, “We want to raise awareness among these businesses so they can guide customers on proper waste disposal practices.” This approach seeks not only to alleviate pressure on public trash cans but also foster a culture of responsible waste management.
To further support this initiative, Girona’s administration plans to reassess cleaning service contracts established in 2022. The mayor acknowledged that while improvements have been made, there remains room for optimization. He stated, “We are committed to continuous improvement and are reviewing all aspects of our waste management services.” This includes adjusting collection routes and schedules based on usage patterns observed during peak times.
Salellas pointed out that certain areas experience rapid filling of trash bins due to high foot traffic from nearby businesses. He explained, “Some locations fill up faster than anticipated because the initial service levels were not adequately calibrated for current demand.” As part of their ongoing evaluation, city officials are determined to develop solutions that prevent future overflow issues.
“There are places where it’s true that the bins fill up more quickly than expected,” explains Salellas.
The city is also intensifying efforts against littering behaviors contributing to cleanliness problems. Salellas criticized individuals who neglect using designated containers despite having access cards for opening them: “While people readily use mobile payments or credit cards for purchases, they seem reluctant when it comes time to dispose of their waste properly.”
This crackdown on incivility includes increased monitoring by municipal police, resulting in 249 fines issued between January and June for littering violations. The mayor highlighted that improper disposal not only tarnishes public spaces but also raises overall service costs for residents: “Every time someone throws a bag outside a container, they increase waste management fees for everyone else,” he remarked.
“Abandoning bags on the street doesn’t just dirty our environment; it raises costs for all citizens,” adds Salellas.
Despite these challenges, Girona boasts an impressive 61% rate of selective waste collection, making it one of the top cities in Catalonia with over 100,000 inhabitants regarding recycling efforts. The mayor concluded by reiterating his commitment: “Our goal is not only high recycling rates but also maintaining clean streets free from overflowing garbage.”
