The Generalitat's Civil Protection has activated the Inuncat emergency plan due to expected heavy rainfall in Girona. Residents are urged to exercise caution as storms may cause flash floods.
The Generalitat de Catalunya has reactivated the Inuncat emergency plan in response to forecasts predicting intense rainfall across the Girona region this Sunday afternoon. The Civil Protection agency issued a statement highlighting that up to 20 liters of rain per square meter could fall within just half an hour, raising concerns about potential flooding.
The Meteocat, Catalonia’s meteorological service, indicated that the heaviest downpours are likely to impact coastal and pre-coastal areas in northern Catalonia, including the Plana de Vic. These storms may be accompanied by severe weather conditions, including hail and violent winds.
Areas such as Girones and Pla de l’Estany face a very high risk of flooding, while regions like Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Garrotxa, and La Selva are under high-risk warnings. The meteorological service has also cautioned about possible hailstones exceeding 2 cm in diameter and wind gusts surpassing 25 m/s, which could lead to dangerous phenomena such as downbursts or tornadoes.
Around 6 PM on Sunday, Meteocat issued an additional alert for very high danger in Barcelona’s Osona and Moianès regions, with high danger levels also noted for Vallès Oriental and Maresme.
Civil Protection authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant regarding mobility and outdoor activities during this period. They specifically warned against venturing into areas prone to water accumulation or sudden river rises.
This weather event is reminiscent of previous incidents where similar rainfall led to significant flooding across various parts of Catalonia. For instance, back in August 2021, a comparable storm resulted in extensive damage and disruption throughout the region.
The forecast indicates that unstable weather conditions will persist into early next week, with continued risks of hailstorms and strong winds particularly affecting areas in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, pre-coastal zones, and other northeastern locations.
Residents are advised to stay updated through official channels for real-time alerts on weather changes. Those living near rivers or streams should take precautions by securing property against potential flooding risks.
