During the recent Sant Joan celebrations in Barcelona, authorities reported 11 arrests, including one for a violent incident involving a machete at Mar Bella beach. Approximately 90,000 people gathered along the city’s coastline to mark this traditional event, which is known for its lively atmosphere.
The most alarming occurrence of the night was a machete fight, resulting in one individual sustaining a serious injury to their back. Fortunately, medical professionals confirmed that there is no immediate threat to their life. The suspect involved in this attack was promptly apprehended by law enforcement.
In addition to the machete incident, police made several other arrests primarily related to thefts. The local emergency services responded to 32 medical calls, with 17 individuals transported to hospitals, mostly due to alcohol-related issues. None of these cases posed life-threatening risks.
The proliferation of knives remains a significant concern for law enforcement agencies.
The Deputy Mayor for Security, Albert Batlle, emphasized that the presence of knives during such events continues to be a major challenge. He noted that even minor differences in knife wounds can lead to fatal outcomes: “A mere two-centimeter difference can result in death,” he warned. To combat this issue, the Urban Guard has intensified its efforts to confiscate weapons and has equipped all patrol vehicles with detectors designed for locating such items.
Batlle also mentioned that during large gatherings like Sant Joan, security measures are heightened to prevent weapons from entering public spaces. However, he acknowledged that many attendees bring kitchen tools for picnics and meals, complicating enforcement efforts.
The night also witnessed the burning of 60 waste containers, as confirmed by local firefighters.
This year’s festivities left behind approximately 70 tons of waste on various beaches across Barcelona. Cleanup operations began early on June 24th at around 6:30 AM at popular spots including Nova Icària and Bogatell beaches. By 8:30 AM, all beaches had been cleared of debris, allowing cleaning crews to begin their work while eager beachgoers awaited access.
The celebration was not without its challenges beyond Barcelona’s borders; nearby L’Hospitalet saw two arrests by local police amid multiple fire incidents requiring intervention from firefighters and civil protection teams. A notable fire broke out shortly after midnight on a fourth-floor balcony due to ignited clothing and boiler equipment.
A total of 30 containers were set ablaze throughout L’Hospitalet during the festivities.
This year marked an increase in illegal gatherings as well; police dispersed an unauthorized party organized via social media at Parc de les Planes. Meanwhile, Badalona experienced large-scale drinking parties but reported fewer disturbances compared to previous years thanks partly to new canine units deployed by city officials aimed at curbing drug use and sales.
The aftermath of Sant Joan highlights ongoing concerns regarding public safety during large-scale events in urban settings. As cities prepare for future celebrations, authorities will likely continue enhancing security measures while balancing community enjoyment with safety protocols.
