The iconic fountains of Plaza Catalunya are back in operation following essential repairs. This restoration ensures their continued presence in the city's landscape during summer months.
After a two-month hiatus for renovations, the historic Fonts Bessones and Font dels Sis Putti in Barcelona’s Plaza Catalunya have resumed operation this July. The city council announced that these beloved water features will be available to the public from April to October, operating daily from 12 PM to 10 PM.
The Fonts Bessones, designed by Espiau Seoane and inaugurated in 1959, consist of two symmetrical ornamental basins located near a gallery of statues from the 1929 Universal Exposition. These fountains have become a defining element of Barcelona’s urban landscape over the decades.
Meanwhile, the Font dels Sis Putti, situated at one end of Plaza Catalunya near Avenida del Portal de l’Àngel, has also undergone significant rehabilitation. Originally constructed in 1926 by artist Jaume Otero, this monumental fountain features cascading water across three levels and is adorned with six cherubic sculptures holding fruit. Recent upgrades included waterproofing improvements and enhanced lighting to add color effects.
The city council emphasized that these ornamental fountains are not intended for bathing or recreational use. The water circulates through closed systems and is not safe for consumption. Furthermore, due to safety concerns regarding slippery surfaces and drainage systems, swimming or entering the fountains is strictly prohibited under municipal regulations.
This restoration comes as part of a broader initiative by Barcelona’s city government to enhance public spaces during hot summer months. In addition to revitalizing these historical landmarks, the city has introduced 18 new water play areas, doubling last year’s offerings. These installations provide safe and accessible environments for families seeking relief from the heat.
The city’s commitment to public hydration is also evident with its network of 1,754 drinking fountains, strategically placed throughout Barcelona. Residents can easily locate these facilities using free mobile applications like “Barcelona en el Bolsillo,” which provide directions and detailed information about each fountain.
This summer marks an important moment for both residents and visitors as they can once again enjoy the aesthetic beauty and historical significance of Plaza Catalunya’s fountains while staying cool in the sweltering heat.
