Starting June 26, Barcelona will host a vibrant festival leading up to the Tour de France's Grand Départ, featuring over 70 free events across the city. This initiative aims to engage residents and celebrate cycling culture.
As the countdown begins for the Grand Départ of the Tour de France, Barcelona is transforming into a hub of cycling festivities from June 26 to July 5. The city will host an extensive program filled with cultural, gastronomic, and commercial activities designed to involve all residents in this monumental sporting event.
The local government has organized more than 70 free events across its ten districts, ensuring that every corner of Barcelona resonates with the spirit of cycling. David Escudé, the city’s Sports Councillor, expressed enthusiasm: “We want to bring the essence of this grand sporting event to all neighborhoods in Barcelona. Our city will welcome the Grand Départ by celebrating and enjoying a festive proposal meant for everyone.”
A highlight of this celebration is Le Tour on Tour, a spectacular float that will travel through various districts until July 1. This mobile show promises street performances infused with music and theatrical elements inspired by cycling culture.
In addition to this float, another initiative called Barcelona en ruta will feature seven itinerant shows making stops throughout all ten districts. These performances will include participatory installations and artistic interventions at public squares, markets, and commercial areas.
The heart of Barcelona will also pulse with music and tradition during this period. The iconic Plaça de la Catedral is set to host major concerts featuring popular artists such as Sidonie and Doctor Prats alongside traditional cultural displays like giant puppet dances and performances by local groups like Falcons de Barcelona.
The nearby Plaça Margarida Xirgu will serve as another key venue for live entertainment, showcasing dance and street theater from various artists including Joan Garriga and DJ Trapella.
This festival isn’t just about entertainment; it actively involves local businesses as well. Fourteen commercial axes are participating in the festivities with diverse offerings including workshops, children’s circuits, concerts, open classes, bicycle exhibitions, and culinary experiences. Local markets have been adorned with thematic decorations while shopping centers such as Westfield Glòries are organizing activities related to cycling culture.
The involvement extends beyond commerce; several guilds are contributing unique creations for the occasion. For instance, the Gremi de Pastissers has crafted a special cake themed around the Tour while other guilds focus on promoting bicycle-related activities.
The official programming for the Grand Départ includes significant events such as a Fan Park at Passeig de Lluís Companys and team presentations at notable venues like Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau. The excitement culminates in two stages of the Tour de France taking place within Barcelona itself.
