This summer, Barcelona’s museums are transforming into cultural hubs, offering a rich array of activities designed to engage visitors of all ages. From new exhibitions to concerts and family-friendly events, the city’s cultural institutions are set to provide an immersive experience that celebrates creativity and discovery.

Exciting exhibitions throughout the summer

The season kicks off with a series of innovative exhibitions across various venues. The Photographic Archive of Barcelona will unveil its exhibition Barcelona and the Sky: Balloons, Airplanes, and Photography, inviting audiences to explore the city from an aerial perspective starting in June. Additionally, the Public Library Arús will showcase The Printed Sky: Astronomy in the Heritage Collection of Arús Library, featuring a lecture by Dr. Gerard Gómez Muntané on June 18.

Coinciding with the UIA World Congress of Architects taking place from June 28 to July 2, the Design Museum – DHub will host an exhibition showcasing contemporary architecture from participating countries. This free event aims to highlight global architectural diversity.

On July 7, La Virreina Centre de la Imatge will open two new exhibitions: Frederic Amat. Eight, which explores artistic influences from poets and philosophers, and Juana Dolores Romero Casanova, which examines historical concepts of love within revolutionary traditions.

A significant exhibition titled The Gypsy People of Catalonia: History and Culture will be available at the Museum of Catalonia History from June 25 until September 13, aiming to recognize and celebrate the rich history of the Romani community in an inclusive manner.

The historic Montjuïc Castle is also gearing up for a busy summer with multiple exhibitions including The Seat: Factory of Transformations. It will offer guided tours and interactive activities for children aged 6-12 throughout these months.

This summer also marks a continuation of cultural performances across various genres. The project Oh!pera, New Creation Micro-operas, directed by Àlex Ollé, brings together composers and designers for interdisciplinary performances at Fabra i Coats and Espai Bota.

A series titled The Musical Evenings at the Monastery, celebrating medieval music in honor of the 700th anniversary of the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes, promises three unique concerts this season. Meanwhile, at the Museum of Catalonia History, four concerts scheduled on Wednesday nights in July aim to connect historical narratives with contemporary music.

Museums are also prioritizing educational initiatives for children during their long summer break. The Museum of Music, for example, offers engaging programs such as Piano Adventures!, where kids can explore musical instruments from around the world through interactive visits.

The Ethnological Museum is hosting workshops like Puppet Making: Shadow Theatre from Java Island. At other venues like CosmoCaixa and Museu Marítim de Barcelona, special programs focusing on eclipses or maritime history are planned throughout summer.

This extensive programming reflects Barcelona’s commitment to making culture accessible while fostering creativity among its residents and visitors alike.
