A step towards the integration of flamenco in higher education
Flamenco music, a cultural symbol of Andalusia, is about to receive a significant boost in the academic field thanks to a new agreement between the Manolo Sanlúcar Foundation and Pablo de Olavide University (UPO). This agreement, recently signed in Seville, aims not only to preserve the legacy of maestro Manolo Sanlúcar but also to integrate it into university educational programs.
The president of the Foundation, José Martínez Talavera, and the rector of UPO, Francisco Oliva Blázquez, sealed this commitment that promises to revolutionise the teaching of flamenco guitar. “Flamenco guitar deserves its own space in the university sphere,” stated Martínez Talavera during the signing. This agreement represents a unique opportunity for new generations to approach this art form with academic rigor and authenticity.
One of the fundamental pillars of the agreement is the International Institute of Flamenco Guitar Manolo Sanlúcar, which will serve as a platform to develop cultural and educational projects. The Foundation aims to safeguard and disseminate the musical legacy of maestro Sanlúcar, ensuring that his influence endures in future generations.
The collaboration aligns with UPO's ongoing efforts to promote flamenco since 2002. Through its Olavide Chair of Flamenco, the university has established an academic framework where this art is studied as an integral part of Andalusian cultural heritage. This chair will be essential for implementing the initiatives derived from the new agreement.
As this collaboration progresses, both José Martínez Talavera and Francisco Oliva Blázquez have expressed their enthusiasm for what this step means for the future of flamenco. “Today we take a very important step for the present and future of flamenco guitar,” concluded Martínez Talavera. With this initiative, it is hoped not only to enrich academic programs but also to foster a greater appreciation for this rich musical tradition among students.
