On June 17, the Eixample district of Barcelona will host its inaugural central event for the LGTBI Pride celebration, marking a significant step in promoting visibility and activism within the community. This year’s festivities include a comprehensive program that features two major initiatives: the central event titled “Pride in Eixample” and a historical route named “Eixample LGTBIQ+: A Century of Existence and Resistance.” These events are designed to coincide with the International Day of LGTBI Pride on June 28, aiming to create an enduring cultural and participatory framework for future celebrations.
Expanded programming highlights community engagement
The central event is set to take place at the intersection of Consell de Cent and Enric Granados streets at 7:00 PM. It will inaugurate a dedicated space for celebration and advocacy within the district, emphasizing public spaces as venues for visibility, recognition, and defense of rights. The evening will feature a proclamation read by Alberto Martín, president of the LGTBI Entities Platform of Catalonia and Panteres Grogues. Performances by Gillette Antagonista, Faraonix King, Glòria Ribera, and the Barcelona Rainbow Singers will also be part of this vibrant gathering.
In addition to these festivities, urban furniture adorned with colors from the LGTBI flag has been installed in the area where the event will occur. This initiative aims to reinforce commitment to diversity while transforming public spaces into symbols of inclusivity and livability in Barcelona.
A notable addition this year is the collaboration between the district and the Centre LGTBI de Barcelona to launch a historical route exploring queer memory in Eixample. Led by historian Salvador Lou from Barcelona Rebel, this route will delve into over a century’s worth of experiences from early 20th century until today. Scheduled sessions are set for June 18 and 20; July 2 and 11; September 17 and 19 at 6:30 PM, requiring prior registration.
The initiatives reflect broader efforts within Eixample to establish an ongoing program that intertwines culture with activism. With nearly thirty activities planned throughout various neighborhoods in Eixample during this year’s Pride month, organizers hope to expand participation across diverse communities.
“We aim to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels represented,” said Alberto Martín during his announcement regarding this year’s events.
This year’s expanded programming not only celebrates pride but also seeks to educate participants about historical struggles faced by queer individuals throughout time. By highlighting both past resistance movements and contemporary achievements within LGTBI rights advocacy, Eixample aims to foster greater understanding among residents while celebrating diversity.
