The city of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat is set to celebrate Sant Joan with a series of festive events, including bonfires and street parties. This year's festivities promise to engage families and honor local traditions.
On June 23, the streets of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat will come alive as the city prepares for its annual Sant Joan celebration. Kicking off at 8:00 AM, the festivities will begin in front of the Town Hall with a lantern-making workshop designed for children, allowing them to craft their own fanalets to accompany the Flama del Canigó to the evening’s bonfire.
Evening festivities ignite community spirit
The evening will see a vibrant continuation of celebrations from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. At 8:00 PM, a large bonfire will be lit in plaza de Sant Joan, marking the start of a lively parade featuring the Flama del Canigó. This procession will wind through various streets including calle de Sant Joan and rambla de Just Oliveras, culminating at the Town Hall.
Upon reaching the Town Hall at 8:30 PM, attendees can expect poetry readings that celebrate fire and summer solstice themes, presented by members of the Col·lectiu Verba del Centre Catòlic. The event will also showcase this year’s ceremonial effigy created by Amics de l’Esmorzar Típic in honor of their 40th anniversary.
Culinary delights and musical performances await
The Flama will then make its way from Town Hall to the bonfire site around 9:00 PM, accompanied by local fire performers known as Diables and Tabalers from Folcat Diabòlic. Meanwhile, at Casino del Centre, dinner service begins at 11:00 PM, where attendees can purchase tickets on-site during designated hours.
The street party atmosphere continues as residents from calle del Xipreret gather for shared meals featuring traditional coca de Sant Joan. As night falls, from 10:30 PM to 2:30 AM, plaza del Ayuntamiento transforms into a lively dance floor with performances by DJ Kötxambrosa and Waikiki. Kötxambrosa promises an eclectic mix while Waikiki revives popular hits spanning decades.
Bells ring out in Bellvitge neighborhood celebration
The nearby neighborhood of Bellvitge is also gearing up for its own Sant Joan festivities on June 23 at Parc Nou. This family-friendly event includes outdoor dining options where guests can reserve tables or bring their own seating. A live orchestra performance is planned to entertain attendees throughout the evening.
The organizers emphasize safety during fireworks use, urging participants to exercise caution while enjoying this beloved tradition. The emphasis on community engagement reflects a broader trend seen across Catalonia where local festivals serve as vital cultural touchstones.
A cherished tradition unites generations
Sant Joan has long been celebrated across Catalonia, symbolizing not just summer’s arrival but also communal bonds strengthened through shared experiences. In many ways, these gatherings echo historical practices dating back centuries when communities would light fires to ward off evil spirits and celebrate fertility.
This year’s events in L’Hospitalet are expected to draw crowds eager for connection and celebration after years marked by social distancing measures. As families gather around bonfires under starlit skies, they’ll partake in rituals that have united generations before them—reminding us all that some traditions never fade away.
