Endesa is set to enhance Barcelona's electrical distribution network with a record investment of €62 million in 2026, marking a significant increase from previous years. This initiative aims to meet rising energy demands and support the city's transition to sustainable energy.

Barcelona is poised for a major upgrade in its electrical infrastructure as Endesa announces a historic investment of €62 million for the year 2026. This funding represents a remarkable 15.5% increase compared to the previous year and underscores the company’s commitment to modernizing the city’s energy framework. The ambitious plan includes approximately 250 projects, focusing on renovation, expansion, and digitalization of the electrical network.

Strategic growth in investment over six years

The announcement was made during a presentation on June 22 by Marcos Lalueza, head of Endesa’s Territorial Unit in Barcelona. He emphasized that this surge in investment reflects a long-term strategy aimed at adapting to evolving energy needs. “Since 2020, we have doubled our annual investments from €37 million to over €62 million,” Lalueza stated.

A response to increasing energy demands

This substantial investment is not merely about maintaining existing infrastructure; it also addresses the pressing need for adaptation amidst an ongoing energy transformation. Factors such as the rise of electric vehicles, industrial electrification, self-consumption practices, and the gradual replacement of heating systems with heat pumps necessitate an upgraded network capable of handling increased capacity.

Lalueza remarked, “The city grows and transforms, and we must be able to accompany that growth as an essential service for citizens.”

A comprehensive plan across all districts

The initiative known as the Pla de Ciutat, coordinated with Barcelona’s City Council, outlines 248 interventions targeting low and medium voltage networks. Among these projects are plans for over 41 kilometers of new electrical lines. The majority of this investment will focus on medium voltage networks—considered crucial for distribution—where Endesa plans to deploy more than 34 kilometers of new lines while renovating 502 transformation centers.

Diving into digitalization for efficiency gains

A key component of this modernization effort involves enhancing digital capabilities within the network. By late 2026, Barcelona will boast 2,867 telecontrolled transformation centers, representing around 42% of total facilities. This technology allows remote management from control centers, enabling quicker fault detection and restoration efforts.

Lalueza noted that “automation reduces response times during incidents and minimizes customer impact.”

Tackling summer demand spikes proactively

The planned upgrades also aim to prepare for peak electricity demand during summer months when air conditioning usage surges dramatically. Lalueza explained that strengthening infrastructure is essential for managing these high-demand periods effectively.

The future hinges on regulatory changes

Beyond immediate investments slated for 2026, Endesa acknowledges that future developments will hinge on regulatory adjustments. The company advocates for increased investment limits recognized by regulations alongside improved planning processes necessary to accommodate anticipated growth in electricity demand.

Lalueza concluded by stating that “the investments we make today will ensure we have a network ready to face tomorrow’s challenges in energy transition.”
