The city of Mollet del Vallès is set to expand with nearly 3,000 new homes and enhanced economic activity by 2040, following the approval of its new urban planning strategy.
In a significant move towards sustainable development, Mollet del Vallès has received approval for its new urban planning strategy, which aims to accommodate a projected population increase from 53,000 to 58,500 by 2040. This comprehensive plan was sanctioned by the Catalan government’s Territory Commission at the end of July after a decade without formal urban planning.
The newly approved plan outlines the construction of 2,950 new housing units, with over half designated as affordable housing. Specifically, 1,552 units will be classified as protected housing. This initiative is expected to raise the total number of affordable homes in the city to approximately 4,132, addressing the growing demand for accessible living spaces.
The primary area earmarked for this expansion is Calderí, which will host around 1,406 residences, ensuring that at least 40% are reserved for public promotion. Mayor Mireia Dionisio emphasized that this definitive approval marks a pivotal moment in shaping Mollet’s future over the coming decades.
Dionisio stated that “this is a good POUM for Mollet because it promotes a model of contained and sustainable growth.” The plan not only focuses on increasing housing availability but also emphasizes environmental protection and economic enhancement.
Sílvia Paneque, the regional Minister of Territory, highlighted that this strategic framework establishes a balanced model prioritizing residential needs alongside economic activities and environmental sustainability. The POUM lays down guidelines ensuring orderly growth while reinforcing Mollet’s status as an essential hub within the metropolitan area.
A key aspect of this urban strategy involves creating additional land reserves dedicated to productive and logistical activities. Areas such as Can Prat and La Teneria will see more than 323,000 square meters allocated for economic use. Additionally, Calderí will contribute another 42,783 square meters. Existing industrial zones will undergo modernization to attract high-value activities compatible with contemporary industry standards.
The integration of green spaces plays a crucial role in this development plan. A significant green infrastructure will connect two major natural areas: the agroecological park of Gallecs and the Besòs River. This connection aims to enhance accessibility through pedestrian pathways and cycling routes that sustainably link neighborhoods with parks and community facilities.
The preservation efforts surrounding Gallecs are particularly noteworthy; it will maintain its ecological integrity while serving as a metropolitan park. Measures have been established to regulate land use in order to safeguard agricultural values and ecological landscapes.
The POUM also sets forth three primary objectives concerning the Besòs River: improving access points along its banks, removing physical barriers obstructing movement around it, and solidifying its role as an environmental space conducive to community interaction within urban settings.
This ambitious urban planning initiative positions Mollet del Vallès not only as a growing residential area but also as an emerging center for economic activity while prioritizing sustainability. Residents can expect ongoing updates about construction timelines and community engagement opportunities through local government channels.
