An uncertain future for Esquerra Republicana
At the heart of Esquerra Republicana (ERC), internal tensions are reaching a critical point. Gabriel Rufián, the party spokesperson in Congress, has proposed the creation of a plurinational left that integrates various progressive forces, an idea that has generated both support and rejection within his own formation.
Rufián has pointed out that there is a “orphaned” progressive electorate, suggesting that it is the responsibility of sovereignist left-wing parties to meet their needs. However, this proposal has not been well received by the party leadership or by several members of the parliamentary group, who feel that his approach could divert ERC from its traditional roadmap.
Since April 2024, when Rufián returned after paternity leave, the atmosphere within the republican ranks has become tense. According to sources close to the party, his relationship with other deputies and staff has deteriorated significantly. The perception is that Rufián prioritises his own agenda over the cohesion of the group.
“He doesn’t wear the ERC jersey, he wears the ‘rufianism’ one,” states an anonymous party member, reflecting the growing discontent towards his leadership. This situation is exacerbated by recent decisions where Rufián did not follow clear party guidelines, such as not calling for the resignation of Minister Óscar Puente during the Rodalies crisis.
Despite the internal tensions, Rufián remains a popular figure among voters. According to recent polls, he is considered one of the most valued leaders to take on the role of President of the Spanish Government. However, this does not guarantee his continuity within the party if his proposals continue to clash with the direction set by Oriol Junqueras and other republican leaders.
Junqueras has made it clear that he is not willing to yield to Rufián’s demands, emphasising that his commitment is to Catalunya and not to political alliances that could dilute that mission. This ideological clash raises questions about the immediate future for both Rufián and ERC.
As this internal conflict progresses, two opposing visions emerge about what could happen. Some firmly believe that this situation will end “badly or very badly,” while others are more optimistic and think that eventually there will be room for compromise. In any case, many observers agree that Rufián’s quest for autonomy could be a determining factor in the coming months.
Although those close to Rufián downplay the current discrepancies and reaffirm his belonging to ERC, it is clear that there is a significant collision between his personal aspirations and the strategic objectives of the party. With each passing day without a clear resolution, the political future of both Gabriel Rufián and Esquerra Republicana seems increasingly uncertain.
