The majority of those detained for the riots on Saturday in Barcelona are minors. The City Council wants their families to pay for the damages, estimated at €36,000.
The City Council of Barcelona will pass on to the families of the detained minors the cost of the damages caused to urban furniture during the riots, estimated at €36,000. This was announced by the mayor, Jaume Collboni, on Cadena SER this Monday, in an interview where he also provided the number of detainees.
Collboni mentioned 128 detentions, while the Interior Minister, Núria Parlon, raised the figure to 130. Of the total, 56% are minors, specifically 74 individuals. For the mayor, the financial responsibility falls on the parents.
"It will be their parents who bear the financial cost," declared Jaume Collboni.
In the judicial sphere, the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office has requested the detention of six minors and more than twenty measures of supervised release. These measures include a prohibition on approaching within one thousand meters of demonstrations. In the case of the adults detained, the Prosecutor's Office requests that they be banned from attending gatherings.
Minister Parlon has asked WhatsApp and Telegram to close the chats where the gatherings were organised and to identify those who initiated them. According to the Generalitat, the call was spread through the Blocus account on TikTok, a movement inspired by the French student protests of the Lycées Indignés. Those wishing to participate received a QR code that led to messaging groups.
Parlon has announced zero tolerance for the upcoming protest scheduled for October 31. For his part, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has assured that he will act firmly against vandalism instigated through social media.
For the residents of Barcelona, the call for October 31 will mark the upcoming days of mobility and police presence in the city centre. The judicial measures and requests to digital platforms do not yet have a set timeline.
