Barcelona is set to enhance its public safety measures with the installation of 99 new surveillance cameras across five high-traffic locations. This initiative aims to bolster security and improve response capabilities in the city.
In a significant move towards enhancing urban safety, Barcelona will install 99 new surveillance cameras in five key areas known for high foot traffic. The initiative, announced by Deputy Mayor for Security Albert Batlle, is part of a broader strategy to improve public safety and ensure a quicker response to incidents.
The targeted locations include the Paseo del Born, where nine cameras will be placed; the Búnquers del Carmel, which will receive eleven; the Anella Olímpica, set to have thirty; nineteen at Parque de la Pegaso; and another thirty around the Fira de Bellcaire. The city plans for these devices to be operational before the end of this year.
This expansion is part of phases two and three of Barcelona’s comprehensive surveillance plan, which has already seen significant investments in areas like Eixample and Ciutat Vella. According to Batlle, these installations are crucial for monitoring spaces that attract large crowds and addressing security concerns effectively.
Currently, Barcelona operates a total of 186 surveillance cameras, including those recently installed at Plaza de Catalunya and Front Marítim. By 2027, the city aims to increase this number significantly, with plans for an additional 500 cameras across 34 different locations. Comparatively, cities such as Paris and Marseille boast over a thousand cameras each, highlighting Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to catch up.
The newly installed systems will not incorporate facial recognition technology or AI-based identification methods. Instead, they will focus on traditional video monitoring techniques while adhering strictly to data protection regulations. Each camera installation requires approval from both local authorities and the Commission for Surveillance Devices in Catalonia.
The selection process for camera placements involves analyzing crime patterns, identifying vulnerable areas, and assessing potential conflict zones within neighborhoods. This strategic approach ensures that resources are allocated where they are most needed.
The city’s commitment extends beyond just installing more cameras; it also includes increasing police presence through initiatives like the Visibility Plan aimed at enhancing patrols in public spaces. Additionally, recent measures such as the Druida Plan target drug-related issues in public areas while fostering better community relations through updated ordinances against incivility.
This multifaceted approach reflects Barcelona’s dedication not only to improving security but also promoting social harmony among its residents. Once all phases are completed, approximately 5.16% of Barcelona’s public space will be under video surveillance.
