In a groundbreaking move for road safety, Catalonia has introduced advanced radar technology capable of identifying drivers who use their mobile phones while behind the wheel. This initiative, spearheaded by the Servei Català de Trànsit and the Mossos d’Esquadra, aims to tackle the rising concern of distracted driving, which poses significant risks on the roads.
The newly deployed radars are equipped with two high-definition cameras and an innovative Australian AI system designed to analyze driver behavior. These devices not only monitor speed but also detect whether drivers or passengers are wearing seatbelts correctly. Initial findings from a pilot program have revealed that approximately 4.3% of drivers were caught using their phones while driving on major highways like the A-2 and AP-7.
This statistic translates to over 8,500 violations within just one month of monitoring, highlighting a troubling trend where one in twenty drivers is distracted by their devices instead of focusing on the road ahead. Ramon Lamiel, director of Trànsit, emphasized that holding a phone in one’s lap is even more dangerous than using it in hand because it diverts attention for longer periods.
The data collected indicates that urban areas along the A-2 see higher instances of mobile phone usage compared to longer stretches on the AP-7. This discrepancy suggests that shorter commutes may lead to more casual attitudes towards safe driving practices during work hours.
Interestingly, around 1.5% of vehicle occupants were found not wearing seatbelts properly—a reminder that some basic safety measures still require vigilance among drivers and passengers alike.
The pilot program’s results align with global trends observed in other regions where similar technologies have been tested. For instance, a state in the United States reported an alarming 11.8% rate of mobile phone usage while driving, placing Catalonia third globally for such infractions—worse than some countries in Africa.
The technology represents a paradigm shift; unlike traditional speed cameras that allow drivers time to adjust their speed upon seeing them, these new radars capture images directly facing the driver before they can react. One camera focuses on capturing distant images as vehicles approach while another provides an overhead view to catch those attempting to conceal their device usage.
