An unlicensed driver transporting tourists from El Prat airport attempted to escape a control by the Mossos d'Esquadra. He ended up arrested on Gran Via in Barcelona.

An Algerian driver aged 56 was arrested on Gran Via in Barcelona, near the Campana, after fleeing from a patrol of the Mossos d'Esquadra with two tourists on board. According to the Mossos, the man was operating as a taxi driver without authorization and is charged with reckless driving and serious disobedience.

The events occurred on Tuesday, October 27, around 18:30. The Mossos' Traffic unit had set up a preventive control at the access to Terminal 1 of El Prat airport to detect vehicles offering taxi services without permission. Among them, they identified a car driven by a man they had previously caught doing the same.

The passengers were unharmed, although they ended the journey very scared and confused about what was happening.

When the officers ordered him to stop, the driver ignored the instruction and accelerated with the tourists inside. Instead of reaching the terminal, the group found themselves involved in a chase of several kilometres that took them away from the airport, where they were supposed to catch their flight.

The driver faced an administrative fine of 4,000 euros for providing illegal taxi service, in addition to the immobilisation of the vehicle until payment was made. With the escape, he added two criminal charges to his record, for which he was placed at the disposal of the duty court.

The officers then requested a legal taxi to take the tourists to Terminal 1. The control is part of an operation that the Mossos have maintained for months against pirate taxis at the airport, which often target customers unaware of how the service works in Barcelona and its metropolitan area, outside of regulated fares.
