The Lloret de Mar City Council has enacted a ban on smoking in beachside chiringuitos, aiming to enhance public health and preserve the natural environment.
In a significant move towards promoting healthier beach environments, the Lloret de Mar City Council has officially prohibited smoking in the terraces of local chiringuitos starting this summer. Mayor Adrià Lamelas emphasized that this initiative follows Lloret’s status as the second Catalan destination to implement a smoking ban on its beaches, trailing only behind Barcelona.
The decision is part of a broader effort to transform the coastal area into a space that prioritizes nature and well-being. Previously, while smoking was not allowed on the sand, patrons could light up once they entered the chiringuitos. Now, they will need to leave the beach entirely if they wish to smoke.
This regulatory change also includes modifications regarding rental spaces for sun loungers and umbrellas. The council has marked designated areas with ropes in the sand where businesses can set up their equipment. This adjustment aims to clarify which sections are reserved for rentals and which remain open for visitors wishing to lay out their towels.
“This solution addresses requests from many service providers,” said Lamelas. “It clearly indicates what space is allocated for businesses and what is available for public use.” Furthermore, all rental equipment will now share a unified beige color scheme intended to minimize visual disruption against the sandy backdrop.
The new regulations apply specifically to three chiringuitos along Lloret Beach, three at Fenals Beach, one at Cala Canyelles, and another at Sa Boadella. In addition to banning smoking on terraces, these establishments have been reclassified as restaurant-bars rather than just beverage vendors. This change allows them to expand their culinary offerings beyond drinks alone.
Historically, similar initiatives have gained traction across various tourist destinations worldwide; for instance, many Mediterranean resorts have adopted stricter regulations regarding smoking in public areas over recent years. Such measures reflect an increasing global trend toward enhancing public health standards in popular vacation spots.
This summer also marks the launch of candlelight concerts at Santa Clotilde Gardens’ amphitheater—a cultural initiative aimed at enriching visitors’ experiences while enjoying classical music illuminated by candlelight. According to Elizabeth Keegan, manager of Lloret Turismo, these visually stunning performances have become a social media sensation.
The concert series features four performances scheduled throughout July and August; tickets are already sold out due to high demand. The picturesque backdrop of Sa Boadella cove adds an enchanting element for attendees.
As part of its commitment to safety during peak tourist season, Lloret de Mar extends its lifeguard services until October 15th—one of the longest operational periods among coastal destinations in Spain. Lifeguards will be present on beaches from May 15th through mid-October with additional coverage during Easter week.
