As the Tour de France approaches, Barcelona is ramping up preparations, installing almost 40,000 safety barriers to ensure a secure environment for the event.
The excitement builds in Barcelona as the city gears up for the 2026 Tour de France, set to kick off on July 2. With just weeks to go, local authorities have begun installing 37,000 protective barriers throughout the urban route to safeguard both cyclists and spectators.
The first stage of this prestigious cycling event will take place on July 4, featuring a challenging urban course that spans 19.6 kilometers. Starting and finishing in Barcelona, this stage includes a scenic stretch along the waterfront and iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Familia. The race culminates with a steep ascent to the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc, where competitors will vie for the title of first leader of the Tour.
In preparation for this inaugural stage, city officials have already deployed 20,000 barriers. By July 2, when teams are officially presented on Avenida de Gaudí, all necessary safety measures will be in place.
The second stage on July 5 will connect Tarragona and Barcelona over a distance of 168.4 kilometers. This leg begins flat along the picturesque Costa Daurada before becoming more demanding with climbs at Côte de Begues and multiple ascents at Montjuïc Castle. An additional 17,000 barriers will be added to those already installed for a total of 37,000 barriers.
The temporary infrastructure is crucial; it not only delineates the racecourse but also protects athletes from crowds while allowing fans to cross safely via pedestrian bridges without disrupting the competition.
The city anticipates an influx of approximately 1.3 million fans during these events. The festivities kick off with team presentations near Sagrada Familia on July 2 and continue with an exciting team time trial through Barcelona on July 4. The following day promises thrilling action as riders tackle both flat stretches and challenging climbs back into the city.
This year’s Tour marks a significant moment for Barcelona as it showcases its vibrant culture and hospitality while hosting one of cycling’s most prestigious events.
