With the Tour de France set to kick off in Barcelona, local hotels are nearing full capacity and raising prices. The event promises significant economic benefits for the city.
As the Tour de France approaches its grand departure from Barcelona on July 4, local hotels are experiencing a surge in bookings, with many nearing full occupancy. This prestigious cycling event is expected to not only fill hotel rooms but also boost local businesses across the city and surrounding regions.
The NH Hotel on Rambla de Catalunya reports nearly 100% occupancy during the Tour days, prompting management to increase room rates due to heightened demand. Roger Grau, the hotel’s director, noted a noticeable uptick in reservations leading up to the event. “We have seen a ‘spike in demand’ that suggests this event has had a significant impact,” he stated.
This year’s Tour follows a busy June filled with international events such as the visit from Pope Leo XIV and major music festivals like Primavera Sound and Sónar. Such events typically create a peak season for employment in hospitality and tourism sectors. Grau mentioned that while Spanish tourists make up only 10% to 15% of their clientele, most visitors hail from international markets, particularly from the United States and Northern Europe.
The influx of tourists coincides with what is traditionally one of Barcelona’s busiest months for tourism. Other hotels have reported strong summer bookings but have not directly linked price increases solely to the Tour. However, some establishments noted price hikes specifically for Friday night before the race.
The tourist apartment sector is also preparing for increased occupancy levels during this period. Marian Muro, director general of Apartur, indicated that tourist apartments expect around 80% occupancy, slightly down from near-full capacity earlier in June. Muro emphasized that events like the Tour contribute significantly to enhancing Barcelona’s global image as an event-hosting powerhouse.
Muro warned that upcoming regulatory changes regarding tourist licenses could lead to reduced availability of rental properties by 2028, potentially driving up hotel prices further and making it harder for international visitors to afford stays in Barcelona.
Pimec representatives highlighted that beyond immediate hotel impacts, the Tour will benefit regional tourism across Catalonia’s counties such as Osona and Baix Penedès through planned parallel activities organized by local municipalities and businesses along the route.
Daniel Brasé from Pimec noted that events like these aim not just at showcasing Barcelona but also encouraging tourists to explore other parts of Catalonia. He advised travelers planning visits during this time to consider alternative transport options due to expected road restrictions associated with the race.
The Tour will affect traffic significantly on July 5 during its Tarragona stage through Barcelona and again on July 6 between Granollers and Angles. These stages cover approximately 400 kilometers, impacting around sixty municipalities along their routes.
The Sunday stage coincides with typical beach-bound traffic, likely causing road closures lasting about five hours on key coastal routes including N-340 and C-31. To ease congestion during this time, tolls on C-32 will be waived between 11 AM and 4 PM. On Monday morning rush hour will see disruptions primarily affecting Osona region roads including C-59 and N-260.
