On September 11, the Generalitat will boost public transport services to accommodate increased travel for Diada events. This includes additional trains and metro services across the region.
In preparation for the Diada celebrations on September 11, the Generalitat de Catalunya has announced significant enhancements to public transport services aimed at facilitating citizen movement to various commemorative events. The initiative, spearheaded by the Departament de Territori, Habitatge i Transició Ecològica, will see an increase in train and metro services across Catalonia, ensuring that residents can participate in this important cultural occasion without transportation barriers.
The Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) will implement a total of 348 additional train circulations on the Barcelona-Vallès line and 176 extra circulations on the Llobregat-Anoia line. Notably, trains connecting Barcelona with Manresa and Igualada will double their capacity from three to six cars, significantly increasing available space for passengers.
As part of the annual tradition, FGC will also illuminate the station at Plaça Catalunya with colors representing the Catalan flag. This station is a major transit point, serving over 90,000 commuters daily, making it a focal point during the festivities.
Renfe is set to bolster its Rodalies service as well, adding 25,000 extra seats to accommodate travelers heading towards key events in Barcelona and surrounding areas like Girona and Terres de l’Ebre. A substantial portion of these additional seats—19,000—will be allocated on line R2, which connects Granollers Centre to Castelldefels. Other lines such as R1, R4, R11, and R16 will also see special trains introduced alongside expanded service offerings.
This comprehensive transport strategy includes strategic reservations of trains and personnel while enhancing customer service teams at major stations. Increased security measures are also being implemented to ensure passenger safety during this busy period.
The metro system in Barcelona is not left out of these enhancements; TMB plans to increase its frequency between 1 PM and 9 PM, deploying an additional twelve trains across conventional lines. Enhanced staffing for customer assistance and security will be present particularly at central stations like Rocafort (L1), Urgell (L1), Universitat (L1 and L2), Catalunya (L1 and L3), Passeig de Gràcia (L2, L3 and L4), Urquinaona (L1 and L4), and Jaume I (L4).
This year’s Diada promises to be one of high attendance given recent trends; previous years have seen similar boosts in transport capacity due to rising participation rates among citizens eager to engage with their cultural heritage. As such adjustments become routine during significant local events like this one, they reflect a growing commitment by authorities to enhance public accessibility.
