A wildfire sparked by unauthorized agricultural work has devastated parts of Catalonia, threatening thousands of hectares and prompting mass evacuations along the Costa Brava.
A significant wildfire has erupted in Catalonia, ignited by an electrical spark from unauthorized agricultural activities near the C-660 road between La Bisbal de l’Empordà and Les Gavarres. As of now, approximately 750 hectares of forest have been destroyed, with an alarming 10,000 hectares at risk due to extreme weather conditions expected this weekend.
The fire has generated a towering pyrocumulus cloud—a phenomenon not seen in the region for years—indicative of extremely violent wildfires classified as sixth-generation. This type of fire poses severe threats not only to the environment but also to local communities.
In response to the escalating situation, authorities have confined around 45,000 residents across several municipalities on the Costa Brava in Girona. Evacuations have been ordered for a colony house, rural estates, and urban developments as a precautionary measure against potential disaster.
A total of 255 firefighters are currently battling the blaze. The Generalitat has requested additional support from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) to ensure rapid response capabilities should other fires break out simultaneously. Firefighters are employing a strategy to contain the flames between La Bisbal d’Empordà and Palafrugell on one flank and Santa Cristina d’Aro on another.
