A fire broke out at the Institut de Investigació i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA-CReSA) in Cerdanyola del Vallès, leading to a swift evacuation of the facility. The incident, which occurred on June 17, was reported around 3:22 PM and was brought under control by firefighters by approximately 5:45 PM. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.

The flames reportedly originated from outside the building, likely igniting in nearby bushes before spreading through a window into the main structure. Montse Díaz, a deputy inspector with the Bombers, provided insight into the situation from the scene. She noted that the fire extended to an adjacent warehouse used for storing straw.
The main building suffered partial damage while the second warehouse is completely affected but has stabilized. Thankfully, two other warehouses housing animals remained untouched by the flames. Firefighters deployed around fifteen units to tackle three active fire fronts: one in the main building containing offices and laboratories, another in the straw storage area where flames were still present but contained, and efforts were made to manage smoke emissions to prevent potential forest fires.
“The biocontainment area has not been affected,” said Josep Usall, director general of IRTA.
Usall expressed relief that no animals were harmed during this incident. The IRTA is known for its research in animal biology and agriculture and houses various livestock as part of its studies on animal viruses such as African swine fever. While firefighters worked diligently to protect these animals from harm, their complete status remains uncertain at this time.
