The Festival La Gran Pantalla kicks off on June 30, showcasing films focused on aging and social issues. Maria Eugènia Gay will inaugurate the event.
On June 30, the vibrant city of Barcelona will host the opening of the eighth edition of the Festival La Gran Pantalla, an international film festival dedicated to celebrating the lives and stories of older adults. The event will commence at 7:00 PM at Cinemes Girona, located at Carrer de Girona, 175. Maria Eugènia Gay, Deputy Mayor for International Relations and Human Rights, is set to participate in this significant cultural occasion.
The inaugural session will feature a screening of Calle Málaga, a recent coproduction starring acclaimed actress Carmen Maura. Following the film, attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage in conversation with Joan Pera, a distinguished actor who will receive an Honorary Award during the ceremony.
This year’s festival promises to be more expansive than ever before, running throughout July but concentrating its main programming from June 30 to July 4. Notably, CaixaForum Barcelona will host weekly screenings every Thursday accompanied by discussions. Additionally, a new online platform called CaixaForum+ has been introduced as part of this year’s offerings, allowing audiences to access films that have become integral to the festival’s history.
The programming for this edition emphasizes themes surrounding life in residential care facilities, social struggles faced by older adults, and desires experienced in later life stages. The official short film section aims to provide a multifaceted perspective on aging through intergenerational connections and familial memories while addressing issues related to caregiving and vulnerability.
In addition to film screenings, attendees can look forward to engaging debates and dialogues facilitated through round tables and masterclasses designed to enrich their understanding of these critical topics. This initiative aligns with broader societal efforts aimed at fostering inclusivity and representation for older generations in cultural narratives.
The Festival La Gran Pantalla is organized by elParlante in collaboration with Barcelona’s Department for Older Adults and supported by various cultural institutions including ICEC (Catalan Institute for Cultural Enterprises), Diputació de Barcelona, Fundació ”la Caixa”, Catalunya Film Festivals, and the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation.
