The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona has finalized a deal to sell two plots for the Tres Chimeneas project, raising €42.7 million to fund urban development.

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) has taken a significant step in urban development by approving the sale of two plots in the Besòs Consortium for a total of €42.7 million. This transaction is part of the ambitious Tres Chimeneas project in Sant Adrià, aimed at establishing a new audiovisual hub that promises to transform the region.

The decision was made during a plenary session on Tuesday, where AMB officials outlined how these funds will be allocated towards financing urban planning costs associated with the area’s transformation. The sale is contingent upon finalizing ongoing urban and property-related procedures, which are still underway.

In addition to this land sale, the AMB also approved plans for constructing the second phase of the Levante collector system within the Tres Chimeneas area. This project entails an estimated investment of €23.9 million and is expected to span approximately 25 months, including both construction and demolition phases.

The Levante collector will extend nearly 11 kilometers, serving multiple municipalities including Tiana, Montgat, Badalona, Sant Adrià, Santa Coloma, and parts of Montcada i Reixac. This infrastructure aims to enhance wastewater management in these areas significantly.

The approval comes as part of broader efforts by AMB to improve waste management strategies across its jurisdiction. Recently, the Metropolitan Council endorsed a recycling strategy aimed at increasing selective waste collection from 40% to 65% by 2030—five years ahead of European Union targets set for 2035.

This initiative also includes ambitious goals such as reducing total waste generation by 10% compared to levels recorded in 2010 and minimizing packaging waste generation by another 10%. Furthermore, less than 10% of waste is expected to end up in controlled landfills.

A key component of this strategy involves enhancing prevention and reuse measures through plans for several new facilities dedicated to material recovery. Additionally, there are proposals to upgrade existing ecoparks into comprehensive organic treatment plants capable of processing an additional 150,000 tons annually.

This shift aims not only at producing compost and biogas but also at creating tailored fertilizers and soil amendments that can better serve local agricultural needs.

The developments surrounding Tres Chimeneas mark a pivotal moment for Sant Adrià as it transitions into a hub for innovation and sustainability. Residents can expect ongoing updates regarding construction timelines and community engagement initiatives as these projects progress.
