In a bid to ensure public safety during the upcoming Sant Joan celebrations, Xavier Garcia Albiol, the mayor of Badalona, has announced stringent measures prohibiting alcohol and drugs on public transport and beaches. This initiative comes after last year’s chaotic festivities, which saw nearly 1,000 emergency calls and numerous incidents of violence.

Enhanced security measures for summer festivities

The announcement was made during an interview on the municipal television program ‘BDN360’, where Albiol outlined that local police will implement checks at key locations including the train station, metro exits, beach access points, and directly on the beaches themselves. “Anyone attempting to bring bottles of alcohol onto the beach will have them confiscated,” he stated. However, he clarified that moderate amounts of alcohol would be permitted at the discretion of law enforcement.

This decision is part of a broader strategy to combat unruly behavior among visitors. Albiol expressed his frustration with what he termed as incivility from some attendees: “We already have enough issues without inviting more trouble from outside cities.” His comments reflect ongoing concerns about maintaining order during large public gatherings.

The mayor’s approach follows a tumultuous Sant Joan in 2025, which was marked by significant disturbances including 80 fires, two gunshot injuries in Montigalà, and a small fire at a local health center. Despite increasing police presence last year, Albiol acknowledged that disturbances were widespread across Badalona.

This year’s plans include deploying additional police forces; however, specific details regarding the number of officers or their operational strategies remain undisclosed. The local police force will also utilize specially trained dogs for drug detection during the celebrations.

“I am not willing to let uncivilized people come to our city,” said Albiol in response to criticism from opposition councilors regarding his new measures.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among local political figures. Council members from ERC and Badalona en Comú Podem criticized the measures as excessive. In response to their concerns, Albiol labeled their remarks as “sad,” indicating his determination to prioritize community safety over political dissent.

Sant Joan is traditionally celebrated with bonfires and fireworks across Catalonia, drawing large crowds eager to partake in festivities. However, this celebration has increasingly faced scrutiny due to rising incidents related to public disorder and safety risks associated with alcohol consumption.

The municipal government’s proactive stance aims not only to mitigate risks but also to foster a more enjoyable environment for families and responsible revelers alike. As Badalona prepares for this year’s events amidst heightened security protocols, residents hope that these measures will lead to a safer celebration free from last year’s turmoil.

As preparations continue ahead of Sant Joan night on June 23rd, both locals and visitors are urged to respect these new regulations aimed at preserving public order while enjoying one of Catalonia’s most cherished traditions.
