The city of Vilanova i la Geltrú is enhancing its cycling facilities as it prepares to host the Tour de France. This initiative aims to promote sustainable mobility and improve local sports infrastructure.

As the prestigious Tour de France approaches, Vilanova i la Geltrú is seizing the opportunity to enhance its cycling infrastructure significantly. The local government has announced a series of improvements aimed at fostering a culture of cycling and promoting sustainable transportation within the community.

The Diputació de Barcelona has allocated funds specifically for upgrading roads that will be traversed by cyclists during the race. According to municipal officials, this event will leave a lasting legacy that extends beyond just a sporting spectacle. “We are committed to reinforcing the bicycle as a tool for sustainable mobility, health, education, and social cohesion,” stated a spokesperson from the city council.

In preparation for this international event, Vilanova is not only focusing on temporary enhancements but also on long-term investments in its sports facilities. A significant portion of the funding will go towards improving the Vicenç Iturat Municipal Cycling Circuit. Recent upgrades have included cleaning access points, renewing landscaping, regulating dirt areas, and acquiring new equipment such as 20 bicycles and protective helmets.

The city has also installed new wall-mounted bike racks, additional benches, and waste bins to create a more user-friendly environment for cyclists. While construction work has temporarily halted due to high temperatures, ongoing projects include repainting and renewing circuit signage as well as repairing asphalt surfaces.

Future plans for the circuit include upgrading electrical systems and lighting, enhancing informational signage, installing picnic tables with benches, and improving existing waste containers with galvanized steel doors. Additionally, there are plans for creating a dedicated mountain biking circuit and constructing new access points from nearby streets.

This initiative aligns with broader educational efforts in Vilanova aimed at integrating cycling into school programs. Students in grades five through eight have been participating in an educational program focused on road cycling that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills related to bike maintenance and safety.

Moreover, since May 2026, there has been a specific initiative encouraging women over 18 years old to take up road cycling through specialized training sessions held both on circuits and public roads. Participants can borrow municipal bicycles to facilitate their involvement.

The culmination of these efforts will be celebrated on October 24, when Vilanova hosts its inaugural ‘Vilanova amb bicicleta’ event. This day promises fun activities suitable for all ages along with various programs centered around sustainable mobility practices and local heritage appreciation.

This comprehensive approach not only enhances Vilanova’s appeal as a destination for cyclists but also fosters community engagement through active participation in healthy lifestyle choices. Residents can look forward to improved facilities that cater not just to competitive cyclists but also encourage recreational use among families and individuals alike.
