Lleida's tourism sector expects to welcome more than 580,000 visitors this summer, driven by the solar eclipse and strong promotional campaigns. The region aims for a record 1.7 million overnight stays.

This summer, Lleida is poised to break its own tourism records as officials project over 580,000 visitors to the region. This surge is attributed not only to the natural beauty of the area but also to a rare solar eclipse occurring on August 12, which will be fully visible in southern Ponent.

Solar eclipse boosts visitor interest

The upcoming solar eclipse is expected to draw tourists from across Europe, particularly since it coincides with a period that typically sees lower visitor numbers. Juan Antonio Serrano, Vice President of the Patronat de Turisme de la Diputació de Lleida, expressed optimism about attracting new visitors: “We are hopeful that this unique event will bring people who may not have considered visiting us before.”

Record-breaking overnight stays anticipated

Serrano highlighted last year’s achievement of 1.57 million overnight stays, marking it as the highest recorded figure for Lleida. This year, he confidently predicts reaching or surpassing 1.7 million stays across various accommodations in the province.

Promotional efforts target broader audience

The region has seen a steady influx of tourists from outside Catalonia, especially in Val d’Aran; however, local visitors still account for approximately 75% of total arrivals. To diversify its tourist base further, Serrano emphasized ongoing promotional campaigns aimed at attracting more visitors from other parts of Spain.

A thriving adventure sports scene

The adventure sports sector is also experiencing a boom thanks to favorable conditions this spring. Florido Dolcet from the Association of Adventure Sports Companies noted that excellent snow reserves have led to an unprecedented season for river sports and predicted continued success into summer due to rising temperatures enhancing outdoor activities.

Campsites and rural accommodations prepare for busy season

Campsites are gearing up for what they expect will be a bustling summer as well. Cel Feliu, President of the Lleida Campsite Association, reported that reservations are progressing well and acknowledged that milder autumn temperatures allow them to extend their operational season beyond traditional summer months.

‘Ara Lleida’ campaign promotes natural beauty

The launch of a new promotional campaign titled “Ara Lleida, con toda naturalidad” aims to showcase the region’s stunning landscapes and authentic experiences while promoting sustainable tourism growth. Juli Alegre, director of the Patronat de Turisme, explained that this initiative seeks to position Lleida as a leading destination for domestic tourism with an investment budget of €620,000.

“This campaign reflects our commitment to responsible growth while celebrating our natural heritage,” Alegre stated during its unveiling.

This renewed focus on promoting Lleida comes at a time when many regions are striving for recovery post-pandemic. The expectation is not just about numbers but also about creating lasting impressions on first-time visitors who might return in future years.
