The coastal town of Calella has introduced a new fully electric tourist train, improving its fleet and service reliability. Set to operate by late July, the train aims for sustainability and accessibility.

In a significant move towards sustainable tourism, Calella has added a new 100% electric tourist train to its existing fleet. This addition comes as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance public transport services while reducing environmental impact. The new vehicle is expected to commence operations by late July, following successful test runs conducted in recent days.

The introduction of this electric carrilet will allow Calella to maintain a consistent service frequency, which is currently set at one hour between stops. However, during peak times or unforeseen circumstances like breakdowns, maintaining this schedule can be challenging. With the new train in operation, city officials anticipate improved reliability and service quality across all conditions.

This latest model retains the classic design that has become synonymous with Calella’s tourist trains, which were first introduced in 2014 and expanded in 2018. The new carrilet can accommodate up to 56 passengers, measures over 16 meters in length, and features enhanced accessibility options including ramps for individuals with reduced mobility.

The investment for this eco-friendly vehicle totaled 360,000 euros, funded through European Next Generation funds as part of the Sustainable Tourism Plan (PSTD).

The pricing structure remains unchanged: standard tickets are priced at 4 euros, while children aged between 3 and 10 years or under 140 cm tall can travel for just 2 euros. Additionally, seniors over 65 years old with a Groc +65 card can also benefit from a discounted fare of 2 euros. This card is available free of charge at Gestvia offices.

The tourist train season kicked off during Holy Week and will continue until November 1st. Plans are underway for the electric train to provide additional services throughout the year as well.

The local government encourages residents and visitors alike to utilize this upgraded transport option not only for its convenience but also for its contribution towards cleaner urban mobility. For those interested in planning their journeys, detailed schedules and stop locations can be accessed via the “Mou-te per Calella” web app developed by Gestvia or through information kiosks located at each stop.
