The Viladecans train station is set for a significant transformation, with public railway company Adif announcing plans to commence renovation works in early 2027. The project, which will cost approximately 4.5 million euros, aims to modernize the station’s facilities and improve accessibility for commuters.
Details of the renovation project
This summer, Adif will initiate the bidding process for the improvement project, which includes replacing outdated metal carpentry and constructing a new canopy to protect access areas. The renovation will also address long-standing issues with flooding in the underpass by completely refurbishing it.
Inside the station, plans include a comprehensive reorganization that will expand the lobby and introduce new furniture. Outside, urbanization improvements will ensure that the perimeter is secure and up-to-date, addressing problems caused by aging infrastructure. Additionally, an elevator repair is scheduled for July as part of preliminary maintenance efforts.
“The modernization of Viladecans station is crucial for enhancing commuter experience,” said Rocío Báguena, General Secretary of Land Transport.
The upcoming renovations are strategically timed to prepare the station for future expansions, including a quadrupling of tracks between Castelldefels and El Prat. This expansion project is currently undergoing informational study bidding processes.
In conjunction with these renovations, Báguena informed Viladecans Mayor Olga Morales about other investments aimed at improving rail services. Among these developments are new high-capacity trains manufactured by Alstom that can accommodate between 200 and 300 additional passengers per convoy, translating to an increase of around 1,000 passengers per hour.
The planned upgrades at Viladecans station reflect a broader commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure in Catalonia. As cities grow and commuter demands increase, modernizing stations becomes essential not only for convenience but also for safety and efficiency.
The investment in Viladecans aligns with regional goals to promote sustainable transport options while accommodating rising passenger numbers. With these enhancements on the horizon, residents can expect a more reliable and user-friendly rail service that meets contemporary standards.
The local government has expressed strong support for this initiative. Mayor Morales emphasized how vital these improvements are for both residents and visitors who rely on public transport daily. “This project represents our commitment to providing quality infrastructure that meets our community’s needs,” she stated during discussions about the renovation plans.
The modernization efforts at Viladecans station not only promise improved facilities but also aim to foster greater use of public transport as part of a sustainable urban mobility strategy. By investing in such projects now, authorities hope to lay down a foundation that supports future growth while enhancing overall travel experiences.
