Mayor Jaume Collboni has visited the expansion works of DFactory Barcelona, which is set to open in February 2027. The Zona Franca complex will grow to nearly 60,000 square metres.

The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, toured the expansion works of DFactory Barcelona on Friday, November 6. He was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Jordi Valls and the chief architect of the Barcelona City Council, María Bohigas. The delegation was received by Pere Navarro, special delegate of the State in the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, and Blanca Sorigué, the general director of the entity.

The visit began in front of the current building and continued through the ground floor of the Cubo building, designed as an open space for concerts, exhibitions, cultural activities, and events. The delegation then entered building A, which will house laboratories, production centres, and offices for industrial innovation companies, and the ground floor of building D, intended for services and as a social centre for the new district.

According to the schedule managed by the Consorci, the construction is progressing as planned. By the end of November 2026, the Cubo building should be completed, including the installation of its large screen, along with the urbanisation of the main avenue and the agora. In December, the facades and roofs of buildings A and D will be finished, and in January 2027, work will begin on building B.

The inauguration is scheduled for February 2027. In March, the Cubo building will host its first official event, and activities will commence in buildings A and D. The Consorci estimates that the first companies will settle between March and April 2027.

With this phase, the area of DFactory Barcelona will increase from 17,000 square metres to nearly 60,000. The complete project, called DFactory Barcelona District, aims to reach 100,000 square metres. During the visit, Collboni asserted that the city should maintain its industrial profile:

“Barcelona has always been an industrial city, and we want it to remain so, adapting its industry to the great challenges of the 21st century.”

Navarro, for his part, pointed out that the cities of the future are also built from their industry:

“The cities of the future are also built from their industry.”

The model advocated by the Consorci is an urban, digitised, and sustainable industry, with laboratories, production, and shared spaces within the city. For the neighbourhood of the Zona Franca, the first visible change will come with the Cubo building open to civic activities starting in March 2027.
