In a coordinated effort between the Mossos d’Esquadra and local police, authorities have successfully dismantled a large-scale indoor marijuana cultivation operation in Alella, a town located in the Maresme region. This operation culminated in the arrest of eight individuals, comprising seven men and one woman aged between 21 and 67 years. The investigation began following numerous tips regarding suspicious activities at a residence on LLevant Street.
Initial inquiries revealed a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the property, alongside signs of continuous air conditioning usage. Observations by investigators noted that while the blinds remained perpetually closed, there was consistent foot traffic with people frequently entering and exiting the home.
The situation escalated when local electrical technicians identified significant electricity theft linked to the suspected marijuana cultivation. On May 24, police apprehended two suspects near the property after discovering 180 grams of marijuana divided into eight packages along with cash. These arrests were pivotal as they connected these individuals directly to the ongoing investigation.
With mounting evidence, law enforcement sought judicial approval for a search warrant. On July 16, officers executed this warrant during an early morning raid at the three-story single-family home. Inside, they found six individuals present along with an astonishing total of 1,359 marijuana plants. The plants were discovered across various rooms: 410 plants on the first floor and two additional cultivation areas in the basement containing 447 and 502 plants, respectively.
The raid also uncovered extensive equipment necessary for indoor growing operations including lights, fans, air filters, and other specialized tools. Additionally, authorities seized approximately 2,690 euros in cash during their search.
The fraudulent electrical setup was particularly alarming; technicians confirmed that it involved dual connections allowing for unregistered electricity consumption to support this illegal activity. This theft resulted in an estimated economic loss of about 59,048 euros. Such setups pose serious risks including potential fires or electrocution hazards.
The arrested individuals were subsequently brought before a Mataró court on July 18. This case highlights ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement as they combat illegal drug operations within residential areas.
