A groundbreaking study from the University of Barcelona uncovers how medieval inhabitants of Barcedana communicated using sound. The findings highlight the valley's historical significance and its advanced communication networks.

In a remarkable exploration of medieval life, researchers from the University of Barcelona have unveiled how residents of the Barcedana valley communicated between the 10th and 12th centuries. Led by archaeologist Paula Melero and historian Laura Castellet, this innovative study utilized reproductions of ancient horns to test sound transmission across various strategic points in the region.

The project involved extensive testing with three types of horns: those made from cow horn, ceramic replicas, and metallic versions. These instruments were strategically placed at 17 locations throughout the valley to assess their effectiveness in transmitting sound over distances exceeding 3 kilometers. The results revealed that not only could these horns carry messages across vast expanses, but they also produced distinct sounds that could be differentiated by listeners.

This research is particularly significant as it identifies key sites within the valley that formed an essential part of this auditory communication network. Notable locations include Castelló Sobirà de Sant Gervàs, Sant Andreu de Llimiana, and the historic castle of Montllor.

The study’s methodology was grounded in previous archaeological visibility assessments and explorations, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of how sound played a crucial role in daily life during this period. According to Melero, while ceramic horns were crafted based on archaeological remnants from the 12th century with assistance from ceramist Marie Picard, cow horn instruments proved equally effective despite being more accessible.

The findings suggest that cow horns were likely linked to pastoral activities and transhumance practices common among medieval communities. Interestingly, while both types produced sounds capable of traveling similar distances, they emitted different tones, enabling users to identify who was signaling.

This auditory method provided advantages over visual communication techniques, particularly due to its adaptability to the rugged terrain characteristic of the Pyrenees. However, researchers noted that visual signals would have complemented auditory ones to create a more robust safety network.

The implications of this research extend beyond mere historical curiosity; they underscore the sophistication inherent in medieval communication systems. Furthermore, they highlight Barcedana as a cohesive geographical unit with deep historical roots dating back centuries.
