Intense heat warnings are active across Catalonia, with authorities on high alert for wildfires. The situation is critical, especially along the coast and pre-coastal areas.
Authorities in Catalonia have activated multiple alerts due to an ongoing heatwave that poses significant risks of wildfires. The intense heat is expected to peak today, particularly affecting coastal regions and their immediate surroundings. According to Protección Civil, the combination of high temperatures and strong winds has created a precarious situation for both residents and natural landscapes.
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) reports that southwestern winds have contributed to rising temperatures, especially along the coast. Areas such as Baix Llobregat and Vallès Oriental are under close scrutiny as they may exceed critical temperature thresholds during the hottest parts of the day.
As night falls, many regions will experience uncomfortable nighttime temperatures, except for higher altitudes like the Pyrenees. Forecasts indicate a gradual cooling trend starting tomorrow, but until then, vigilance remains crucial.
In response to this extreme weather event, Protección Civil has urged municipalities to prepare cool spaces equipped with air conditioning for vulnerable populations. This includes individuals over 75 years old without family support, those with disabilities or chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers who may be exposed to these harsh conditions.
“We need local governments to ensure that our most vulnerable citizens have access to safe environments during this heatwave,” said a spokesperson from Protección Civil.
The wildfire risk is particularly alarming today as conditions favor rapid fire spread. The Bombers de la Generalitat have increased operational readiness across all emergency regions in Catalonia. Currently, the fire risk level stands at 5 out of 6 in certain areas like Lleida’s southern region and Terres de l’Ebre.
This heightened state of alert follows two previous intense heatwaves earlier this season which have significantly dried out vegetation despite winter rains. As a precautionary measure against potential wildfires, eight natural spaces have been closed off from public access including Montserrat and Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac.
“The current conditions could lead to secondary fire outbreaks in forested areas,” warned officials from the Unitat Tècnica del Grup d’Actuacions Forestals (GRAF).
The Bombers are not only prepared for new incidents but are also monitoring existing fires that were reported earlier this week. With additional resources deployed across affected regions, they aim to mitigate any potential disasters stemming from today’s extreme weather conditions.
The restrictions on recreational activities remain in place as well; municipalities classified under level 4 of the Alfa plan face limitations on youth activities and fireworks usage due to elevated fire risks.
The decision regarding when these closed spaces can reopen will depend heavily on future weather developments and ongoing assessments of wildfire risks. For now, residents are advised to stay informed through local news outlets about safety measures and available cooling centers during this challenging period.
