Over 400 firefighters are combating a wildfire in Baix Empordà, which has scorched over 2,300 hectares. With a heatwave approaching, the risk of flare-ups remains high.
In a critical effort to control a devastating wildfire in Baix Empordà, more than 400 firefighters are currently deployed to manage the situation. The fire has ravaged over 2,300 hectares, primarily affecting the forested areas of Les Gavarres Natural Park. Although the fire entered a stabilization phase last night, authorities remain cautious as they work to prevent any potential re-ignition.
The Generalitat’s firefighting teams have lifted confinement orders for nine municipalities previously impacted by the blaze. However, they emphasize that declaring the fire fully controlled is premature. Firefighters continue to douse hotspots and monitor conditions closely due to an impending heatwave that could push temperatures up to 42 degrees Celsius.
A significant concern lies with the right flank of the fire, which threatens to spread westward into Les Gavarres. Fire crews are actively inspecting areas for any remaining active flames while coordinating strategies from their command center for ongoing operations.
The current situation is exacerbated by extreme weather conditions; with 419 municipalities across 31 counties facing very high or extreme wildfire risks, adherence to safety regulations is crucial. This follows an incident last Friday when a worker inadvertently ignited a fire in La Bisbal d’Empordà while using cutting tools near roadside vegetation.
The firefighting efforts include not only local firefighters but also support from around 100 soldiers from the Military Emergency Unit (UME), volunteers, and forest defense agents who are managing access points around Les Gavarres. The area remains closed off as crews work tirelessly on containment.
The initial assessment indicates that eight homes have been completely destroyed and another eighteen partially damaged due to the flames. Additionally, several vehicles and industrial structures have been lost in this disaster. Medical services have treated eleven individuals affected by smoke inhalation or injuries related to firefighting efforts—five civilians, five firefighters, and one soldier from UME.
This Sunday saw firefighters engaged not only in Baix Empordà but also responding to other wildfires across various municipalities including Sant Adreu de la Barca and Piera in Barcelona province. The urgency of these operations highlights the growing threat posed by wildfires during peak summer months.
