A new gastronomic initiative in Viladecans showcases the versatility of local cherry tomatoes. Six restaurants will feature unique dishes until August 2.

In a vibrant celebration of local agriculture, Viladecans has kicked off its inaugural Ruta del Cherry, a culinary journey dedicated to the region’s signature cherry tomatoes. This initiative, which runs until August 2, involves six local restaurants that will creatively incorporate this beloved ingredient into their menus.

The decision to promote cherry tomatoes as the emblematic food of Viladecans was made four years ago, aligning it with other regional specialties like the artichokes from El Prat de Llobregat and asparagus from Gavà. The aim is not only to highlight the agricultural heritage of the area but also to enhance community engagement through gastronomy.

Mingo Morilla, president of the Gremi d’Hostaleria de Viladecans and chef at Cal Mingo, emphasized that this initiative will showcase both the versatility of cherry tomatoes and the creativity of local chefs. “We want to demonstrate how this product can be transformed into various dishes,” he stated during a press conference announcing the event.

The participating restaurants include Can Martí, Mamut Beach Club, El Petit Can Batllori, Vilateca Plats i Platets, and Bö. Each establishment is set to present two distinct dishes featuring cherry tomatoes. Culinary offerings range from cod salad with cherry tomatoes to milanesa topped with confit tomatoes and even hummus infused with this local delicacy.

Rosa Cañisà, the city’s councilor for commerce, highlighted the importance of collaboration among agriculture, local commerce, municipal markets, and restaurants in creating a network that brings fresh produce directly to consumers. “This partnership allows us to strengthen our community ties while promoting our agricultural products,” she remarked.

Viladecans produces approximately 80,000 kilograms of cherry tomatoes annually, primarily grown in greenhouses around the city. Notably, these tomatoes are distributed in cardboard boxes without plastic packaging—a move towards sustainability that resonates with environmentally conscious consumers.

This culinary route not only serves as an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to indulge in delicious meals but also aims to foster appreciation for locally sourced ingredients. Historical precedents show that similar initiatives have successfully boosted tourism and economic activity in other regions by emphasizing unique agricultural products.

<pas part of this initiative's outreach efforts, participants are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using designated hashtags related to the Ruta del Cherry. This digital engagement aims to attract more visitors and create buzz around Viladecans' rich culinary scene.

<pfor those interested in exploring these delightful offerings before August 2nd, reservations are recommended due to expected high demand at participating venues. Diners can enjoy a taste of Viladecans’ agricultural pride while supporting local businesses during this flavorful celebration.
